About The Mommy Team

A sideline setup with a folded team jersey, cleats, a mesh ball bag and a folding chair ready for game day

I'm Steph Romano — mom of three (11, 8, and 5), currently running one travel soccer season, one rec baseball season, and one first-ever season of t-ball, sometimes all in the same weekend. Before the minivan era I was a high-school point guard, and I've moonlighted as a rec-league assistant coach, which means I've stood on both sides of the whistle. Here's the single most useful thing all of it taught me: the kid plays the season — our job is to make it playable.

That's what this site is. The youth-sports parent's field guide: which sport to start at which age, what gear to buy in what size (and what the store is wrong about), how to behave on a sideline, and how to raise the kid inside the jersey without becoming the parent the refs talk about in the parking lot.

The lineup: starting a sport for honest first-season guides (begin with the best sports for 5-year-olds — the post this site is built around), gear & sizing for scouting-report charts on cleats, balls, and everything with a strap, sideline life for game-day culture and the kit that survives it, raising an athlete for the quitting talks and coach conversations, and backyard practice for ten-minute driveway sessions that don't require a lecture.

House rules, stated up front: I am fierce about cheering and allergic to coaching from the fence. You will find zero judgment here about rec versus travel, zero takes about trophies, and zero opinions about whether your kid should be "more competitive." Some kids are building a college resume; most are building a childhood. Both are seasons worth showing up for.

What you also won't find: schedules and carpool math (my friend Jenna at That Suburban Momma runs that side of the operation better than I ever could), medical advice of any kind, or a ranked verdict on which brand of anything is "the best." I'll show you how it should fit; you know your kid.

A note on affiliate links: some posts contain affiliate links — if you buy through one, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only link gear that has survived an actual season in an actual mesh bag.
