Softball Bat Size Chart for Kids: Length, Drop, Stamp
A youth softball bat has three numbers, and the order you read them in saves you a second bat. First the stamp, because a bat your league does not accept cannot be used in a game. Then the length: Softball Canada’s youth chart puts under-7s at 24 to 26 inches, 8 to 9 at 26 to 29, 10 to 11 at 28 to 31 and 12 to 13 at 29 to 33. Last the drop, weight minus length, which runs lighter for younger players, around -10 to -13. Everything below assumes fastpitch, which is what most youth girls’ leagues play. The fit checks decide between two lengths.
Fastpitch or slowpitch: settle it before the store
Softball bats are sold in two separate families, fastpitch and slowpitch, and manufacturers list them on separate shelves with separate stamps. If the pitcher in your kid’s league throws windmill, underhand and fast, the bat is a fastpitch bat. The bat will say so on the barrel. Buying the wrong family is the most common softball bat mistake, and it is usually made by a parent who played the other game.
Second trap, same aisle: a baseball bat is not a softball bat. Little League’s Rule 1.10 for softball starts with “The bat must be a softball bat which meets Little League specifications,” so the kid’s coach-pitch baseball bat from two springs ago does not carry over.
Number one: the stamp, and what your league actually checks
Leagues check bats against a standard, and the standard is printed on the bat. Read these before buying:
Little League Softball. Its bat rules page sets the softball limits in Rule 1.10: no more than 33 inches long (34 for Junior and Senior League), no more than 2-1/4 inches in diameter, and non-wood bats “shall be printed with a BPF (bat performance factor) of 1.20.” It adds that “the 2-1/4 inch bat ring must be used for bats in all softball divisions,” and that if the specification marks are not legible, the bat “cannot be used.” Note what Little League’s bat information page says about the USABat stamp parents know from baseball: those changes “only affect baseball divisions and don’t affect any divisions of softball.”
USA Softball. Its certified equipment page keeps a list of certified bats by category and explains the test behind the mark: “98 mph is the maximum bat ball speed allowed for a bat to be USA Softball Certified.”
USSSA, NSA, ISA and high school. Bat Digest’s bat size chart puts it plainly: “ASA/USA Softball, USSSA, NSA, and ISA all have different approved bat lists and performance standards,” and high school players need the NFHS mark. Travel teams often play tournaments under more than one of these.
So the rule I use is the one on our youth baseball bat size chart: ask the league which stamp before you buy. For a travel player, ask which tournaments the team enters, then look for a bat that carries every mark on that list.
Number two: length, from two charts that disagree
Here are two published youth softball charts side by side. Softball Canada’s chart comes from a national governing body; Bat Digest’s comes from what it describes as “data from over 4,000 players.”
| Age | Softball Canada length | Bat Digest length |
|---|---|---|
| Under 7 | 24”–26” | not listed |
| 8–9 | 26”–29” | 28”–30” (ages 8–10) |
| 10–11 | 28”–31” | 28”–30” at 10, 30”–32” at 11 |
| 12–13 | 29”–33” | 30”–32” (ages 11–13) |
| 14 and over | 31”–34” | 32”–34” |
The two agree at the top of the range and split at the bottom. An eight-year-old is 26 to 29 inches on one chart and 28 to 30 on the other. That gap is the whole reason the fit checks exist.
When they disagree, go shorter. A bat the hitter controls gets more good swings than one she is fighting. Bat Digest’s own baseball advice says it directly: “A lighter bat that can be swung properly is better than a heavier one that can’t.” Remember the ceiling, too: in Little League Softball below Junior League, 33 inches is the legal maximum.
Number three: the drop, and why softball runs lighter
Drop is the bat’s weight in ounces minus its length in inches, so it is always a negative number. A 28-inch bat marked -10 weighs 18 ounces; the same length at -12 weighs 16.
Softball runs lighter than youth baseball at the same age. The two charts again, side by side:
| Age | Softball Canada drop | Bat Digest drop |
|---|---|---|
| Under 7 and 8–9 | -13.5 to -10 | -11 to -13 (ages 8–10) |
| 10–11 | -13 to -8 | -11 to -13 at 10, -10 to -12 at 11 |
| 12–13 | -12 to -8 | -10 to -12 (ages 11–13) |
| 14 and over | -10 to -8 | -8 to -10 |
Bat Digest also notes that power hitters tend to choose end-loaded bats with smaller drops, while contact hitters “typically choose balanced bats with higher drop weights for improved bat speed and control.” For a nine-year-old in her second season, that question can wait. Balanced and on the lighter end of her age band is the default.
Drop is about swing control, full stop. Anything about arms, shoulders or wrists is a question for the coach or the pediatrician, not a sizing chart.
The fit checks
Charts get you to two lengths. These decide between them, and they work the same way they do on our baseball bat page:
- The hip check. Stand the bat up beside her, knob up, while she wears her cleats. The handle should reach about her hip, not higher.
- The arm’s-length hold. Top hand on the grip, bat held straight out to the side. If the barrel sags toward the floor within a few seconds, it is a lot of bat for her.
- Ten dry swings. Watch the tenth. If the swing gets slow and loopy by the end, try the shorter length or the lighter drop.
Two of three looking like hard work means size down. Buy the bat for this season’s player, not next year’s.
The worked example
For a young fastpitch hitter in her first league seasons, the one I point families at is the Easton Pink Sapphire -10. On Easton’s own product page (checked October 2026), it is a one-piece alloy fastpitch bat with a 2-1/4-inch barrel, a -10 drop and a listed certification of “All Association,” sold in seven lengths. The Amazon link opens on one length; pick hers from the chart and checks above. Before the first game, hold it up to the coach or check the barrel against your league’s list, especially for Little League’s BPF 1.20 print.
Named alternatives, deliberately unlinked: Easton, Rawlings and other makers sell youth fastpitch lines at -11 and -12 for younger or smaller hitters.
What to skip
- A slowpitch bat. A different family of bat for a different game.
- Her brother’s baseball bat. Little League Softball’s rule requires a softball bat.
- Two inches up “to grow into.” The fit checks exist because a too-long bat is swung badly.
- The -8 high school bat for a 10U player. A smaller drop means a heavier bat for its length, and that is the wrong direction at ten.
- Choke-up knobs and batting donuts. Little League says no bat “is permitted to be altered,” names choke-knobs and choke-up assists as not permitted, and says “the traditional batting donut is not permissible.”
The glove is the other half of the purchase. Our glove size chart carries a youth softball row and the same fit-first approach.
FAQ: softball bat sizes for kids
What size softball bat for a 10 year old?
Softball Canada’s chart puts ages 10 to 11 at 28 to 31 inches; Bat Digest lists 28 to 30 inches at ten. The overlap of the two is 28 to 30 inches. Do the hip check and the dry swings before you pay.
What size bat for an 8 year old in softball?
Softball Canada lists 26 to 29 inches for ages 8 to 9, and Bat Digest 28 to 30 for ages 8 to 10. Where the two overlap, 28 to 29, is the place to start the fit checks, and a small eight-year-old may fit the bottom of the range.
What does -10 mean on a softball bat?
It is the drop: weight in ounces minus length in inches. A 29-inch bat at -10 weighs 19 ounces. The bigger the number after the minus sign, the lighter the bat for its length.
Can my daughter use a baseball bat for softball?
Not in Little League Softball, whose Rule 1.10 says the bat must be a softball bat. Softball bats also have a smaller barrel, 2-1/4 inches, so the two are not interchangeable.
Does a USA Softball bat work in USSSA tournaments?
Only if it also carries the USSSA mark. Many youth fastpitch bats carry several certifications at once, so read the barrel and the tournament rules.
